o first project that I’m posting about, is a jewelry earring holder. This was an old cabinet door that I found at Habitat for Humanity restore, this past week. It was $1.50, do I need to say more? I don’t think so. So if you have a local Habitat for Humanity, you may want to look into it as well, you would be surprised to what you will find and can create. My store is open Wed – Sat, and just a few hours and I always check maybe 1-2 times a week, just because a lot of stuff comes in and you never know what you will find.
So back to my new earring holder. This is what it looked like before I got to work.
This was covered in dirty, water stain and it was very dry, so no life in the frame anymore, so with the tools I had on hand, it was time to remove, clean up and rebuild.
So the first thing I did was remove the wire mesh from the back of the frame.
So with a simple flat head, I removed all the old staples that was holding it to the wood frame, the metal was sharp so I was wearing my leather gloves, very wise idea so you don’t cut up your hand. (Also it’s wise to be up to date on your Tetanus shot too)
Once I was able to get this wire off it was time to clean the metal up and boy was it dirty. All I used was water and dawn dish soap with a wire brush to really get it clean so that I can spray paint it later.
This took about 10minutes to clean then I rinsed with water, and then let it dry so that I could spray paint it silver, since I didn’t like the gold.
So while that was drying I started on the frame, it took the frame and stapled the edges down to make sure the structure was solid and would hold up.
Then was the fun part, sanding. It was very soft wood so the sanding went very fast.
After removing the layers and making sure the frame was prepared I got out some dark stain that I already had. (You can pick up stains really cheap at your local hardware store, in the oops section at times for as low as $1. Which this can was, it was called Jacobean, and I just love how it’s dark and rich for this piece of work)
So once I was down staining the frame, it was pretty much a waiting game, for the frame to dry. Once it was dry I was able to flip it over and staple the now silver metal sheets back to the frame.
So in all it was about an hour and a half project from start to finish for this simple DIY refresher. So taking a simple set up like this it was easy to make a new earring post holder for my wall.
So just a few d-hooks on the back and it was able to go on the wall in my room and the earrings hang off it. I was also going to add a few old door knobs to hand a few necklaces off it as well. Once I do, I’ll update with a new photo, but in all for a $1.50 project, it didn’t turn out bad at all. Leave comments, ask questions.
